Studying artificial intelligence in Poland by testing its limits

A model can recognise damaged roads in a set of test photographs and struggle when the weather changes. Understanding that failure is part of studying artificial intelligence. An English-taught degree in Poland should give students the mathematical and programming foundations to investigate results, including the impressive ones. The useful questions concern the data, the experiment and the software around the model.

The foundations that explain a result

Linear algebra, probability, calculus and programming let students look inside an AI result. They support the questions that demonstrations often leave out: how the model learned, what was held back for testing and why a prediction should be trusted in a different setting. Algorithms and data structures remain important alongside specialist work in machine learning.

An undergraduate AI programme may teach data structures, algorithms, optimisation and software engineering alongside machine learning. Later projects can involve neural networks, computer vision, natural-language processing or autonomous systems. The exact balance depends on the institution. A programme focused on theoretical foundations will feel different from one dominated by applied software projects, even if both carry the same degree title.

Reading the Poznań curriculum

Poznan University of Technology lists Artificial Intelligence as a full-time first-cycle programme taught in English and lasting seven semesters. Its university programme description names algorithmics, neural networks, machine learning, data analysis and optimisation among the areas studied. The published syllabus also contains introductory programming and mathematical courses in the early semesters. This is a concrete example that applicants can examine rather than relying on a generic directory entry.

Do not assume that a programme offered for one academic year automatically remains open on identical terms the next year. Admission quotas, assessment methods and tuition can change. Look for a university's current catalogue, not a search-result snippet, and confirm whether the level is bachelor's, master's or a specialisation within Computer Science.

Building an evaluation that means something

Imagine building a system intended to classify photographs of damaged roads. A weak project might report a high accuracy figure without explaining the dataset. A strong project defines its task, separates training and test data, documents how pictures were collected and checks performance on images the model has never seen. It also asks whether the system performs differently in rain, at night or in unfamiliar cities.

These habits matter beyond computer vision. Language models can confidently produce incorrect statements; predictive systems can inherit bias from historical data; automated decisions may affect people who never consented to being part of the experiment. Responsible AI education therefore needs reproducibility, data governance, cybersecurity awareness and discussion of social consequences. Ask whether the syllabus includes ethics, safety and model evaluation instead of treating these as optional extras.

The software around a model

Python is widely used in machine learning, but knowledge of one programming language is not a complete qualification. Students benefit from version control, testing, databases, Linux environments, collaborative development and clear technical writing. Projects should demonstrate choices and trade-offs: why a baseline model was selected, what alternative approaches were tested and what evidence supports the conclusions.

A good student portfolio might contain a small but carefully documented project with publicly shareable code and a technical report. It should not expose private data or claim results that cannot be reproduced. Employers often learn more from a clear explanation of an imperfect experiment than from a polished but unexplained demonstration.

Comparing AI with computer science

Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science overlap substantially, especially in the first years. Computer Science may provide a broader grounding in systems, networking, programming languages and software architecture. AI-oriented curricula allocate more attention to probabilistic reasoning, learning algorithms and intelligent decision-making. Neither is automatically superior: the better choice depends on your interests, preparation and future plans.

Read the course list semester by semester. Does the programme teach statistics early enough? Is there an opportunity for team projects? Which computing resources are available to students? Are there opportunities to work with researchers? A university's public syllabus should provide clearer answers than a slogan promising a career in tomorrow's technology.

Preparation and access to computing

Strong preparation in mathematics is particularly valuable. English-language requirements and document rules vary, and some universities may assess science subjects or hold entrance examinations. International applicants should check recognition of their school qualifications well ahead of the deadline. A degree labelled English-taught should also have its teaching language confirmed on the specific recruitment page.

Include tuition, accommodation and equipment in the budget. Expensive specialist hardware is not necessarily needed personally: universities may provide laboratories or remote computing resources, and many educational projects can use modest devices. Nevertheless, clarify what software, laboratory access and computing services are included in the fees before you decide.

What happens when the weather changes

For the road-image project, separate photographs used during development from those used for final evaluation. Note where the images came from and which conditions they cover. Then consider a rainy night in a city absent from the training set. The problem has changed even if the software still returns a confident label.

You can investigate these ideas with a small educational dataset and a simple baseline. Keep the experiment lawful, document what you did and report the errors. A degree should help you develop that discipline through assessed work, access to supervision and computing resources. Ask what students are expected to explain about their results, particularly when a model could affect decisions about people.

Skills that leave room to adapt

Compare AI with a broader computer science route before deciding. The early subjects may overlap, while later modules place different demands on statistics, systems and software engineering. Read the sequence of compulsory teaching and the prerequisites for specialist projects.

The degree title cannot predict the tools you will use several years from now. A foundation that lets you understand a method, test it carefully and build dependable software around it gives you room to adapt. Look for a programme that makes those abilities visible in the work students actually complete.
